In the summer of 2013, I read the book Just My Type, and it was filled with these amazing quotes about the ampersand. One of my favorites reads, “Done well, an [ampersand] is not so much a character as a creature, an animal from the deep.” How vivid is that description?! I already had a deep love for the ampersand and in fact, I have one tattooed on my wrist.
This shape has so much history and weight to it. If you have any love for it at all, pick up Just My Type and read a little more about it. You will not be sorry. There are tons of unique ampersands across different types and I wanted to have some in my house. You can get tons of ampersand prints on Etsy already, and plenty in stores, but none of them were the style I liked. To me, none of them gave a call to the typeface of the ampersand itself. So I decided to make some myself!
I picked some of my types and set them with a minimal description of the font family & style underneath. Of course I had to do both black and white versions. Since they were done digitally, I had them printed in a variety of sizes so that they could work well on different types of gallery walls.
Right now, I think my personal favorite is the chunky Pistilli Roman. You can see it below on the left.
I tried to pick a variety of different weights and styles so if someone really wanted a dozen ampersands, they could have a full set.
I have them all listed for sale on Etsy. I have four different sizes. I am thinking about offering them as a set of cards one day or as digital copies so people can just print them themselves at home.
