Letterpress: Knock On Wood

So my friend Paul gifted me with this amazing wood grain paper. He had some left over after a job he printed and thought I would enjoy it. Free paper? Always.

Last week, I tested it out using a giant wood letter N that I borrowed from another pressman. I just couldn't think of anything to do with it for awhile but after seeing it printed with large type, I thought I'd try something small. I set this little san-serif knock on wood and make a few cards.

It was a bit challenging to print on. I think things with little lines got a bit lost inside the grains. Perhaps next time I'll try something larger or something that doesn't require such sharp clean edges. You can really see here how the type hides in the wood grain. I like putting the type off to the side. It makes the paper fun and hopefully someone can reuse some of it afterwards.

The cards are totally blank on the inside and smooth for writing. This really shows you have different that paper is from card to card.

Since I had to cut the paper to size, the little phrase is in a different spot on the grain every time.
