Sorrento, Italy

The second stop on our trip was Sorrento, Italy.Looking down from our hotel roof at the Marina Grande.Dali was all over the city.Famous Sites : Sorrento Cathedral Clock Tower & The Church of S. Maria del CarmeloNew Shades! My mother & IWalking around Piazza TassoHotel del Mare.Grand Marina at night. We took a train past Pompeii to the town of Ercolano where the ruins of Herculaneum lie. Both Pompeii and Herculaneum were hit by Vesuvius in 79ADUnlike Pompeii however, the city was preserved by the volcanic pyroclastic flows. They think that more of the old city is buried underneath what is now Ercolano. You can see how the new city is literally on top of the ruins.Panorama of the dig site.Mosaic floor still intact.Paint still on the walls. So much was preserved! It was a wealthier city than its neighbor so there was a lot of beauty to be seen.Even some wood remains.Though faint, pink paint is still on the heads of these statues. They thought that nearly everyone escaped the city. It was later discovered that the people fled into boat chambers near the water's edge where they met their end. Their bones are still persevered in these places.Waiting for the train...Playing with panorama!Old Mill ruins right of the main piazza.More Dali! Vesuvius lingering in the night sky!Probably the coolest thing we did in Sorrento was hike to these amazing ruins. To google it you search Punta del Capo, but it was better known as Regina's Giovanna baths. It is a natural swimming pool which has an opening to the ocean. We were certainly the only non Italians there. Stefan and I jumped off the surrounding ruins into the rocks below.Looking down into the pool and along the bath to the ocean outside.Dinner & Dessert! My favorite gelato in Italy by far was at a place called Raki. Beats anywhere I have ever been! Fresh and amazing!Walking the streets at night.A view of Sorrento as we hikes towards the Baths.
