Inspiration: There's always light

There's Always Light.jpg

I was pretty busy on Inauguration day with work, so I only got a few minutes to pull away and see the action. In the evening however, I sat down to listen to some more of it and was truly inspired by Amanda Gorman’s reading. WOW. My church service Sunday was about being the salt & light and its come up in so many ways now throughout the rest of the week.

While I was listening, I started taking notes in my journal and then immediately fell in love with the last line, like the rest of the US. I pulled out some paper and decided to write it to keep on my desk.

I chose this textured paper simply because it was within my reach from a project I was working on last week! First, I laid it out in pencil and followed with inking. What I ended up loving was how the flourished descenders worked with the ascenders on the line below! Happy accidents.

Swipe to the side on Instagram to see a quick hyperlapse of me writing the end line. You can see it was clearly late at night. The nib I used was a “blue pumpkin” and I just had some simple sumi ink. In the morning, I erased my pencil lines and snapped an image.

My favorite part about her reading was how the very opening lines beckoned “Where can we find the light in this never ending shade?” - and how she wrapped it with a resounding answer about ourselves. Hoping to carry this inspiration throughout today.
